A Little About Mrs. Paterson ...
8242016_42715_1.jpg
I am excited that this is my 3rd year here at B.B. Rice Elementary, and my 8th year teaching. I have taught 7 years, 5 years teaching highschool art, floral design, and speech in North East Texas, and then 2 year here at Rice. I went to college at a small Christian university called Harding University in Searcy, AR, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science; majoring in Interior Design. I came from a long line of teachers, and so only naturally after having my 1st son I too went back and got my alternative teaching certificate through Education Service Center Region VII. I am married and have 3 children, and LOVE teaching, reading, traveling, and of course creating various forms of art. I'm excited about this school year and look forward to working with your children in hopes to provide even more opportunities and lessons this year!

This year specials schedule is a little different. Instead of each student seeing us once a week, students will now see us 3 times in 2 weeks. Due to this schedule change we will now have a schedule that alternates the day your child will see us. See the calendar below to see when your child will come to art.

A Note home for Parents,

Welcome to Art!
Hello! My name is Rebecca Paterson, and I will be teaching your student in art class this year at B.B. Rice Elementary. In art we do a variety of activities; from drawing to painting, to working with clay and technology. I hope that your student will enjoy art this year and all the things they will learn and create while in my class. Due to these various activities there are times during the year that your child may get “messy”. On the days your student has art, I suggest him/her not wearing their best or favorite clothes. On days that we are working with messier materials I will do my best to give them advance notice. In art we do provide art smocks (aka aprons) to help your child from getting dirty, but it will be up to the student to wear it. (I can not force any student to wear it that does not want to.) These art smocks will be for the entire student body to use. If you would like your child to have their very own art smock to wear in art class they may bring one. I recommend an OLD and LARGE shirt (larger than what they wear) so that they may easily put on and take off over their clothes. If you would like for your student to have their own, please put their name inside the shirt and have them bring it to me when they see me in art class next. I will provide a safe place for them to store it and have it ready for them on days they would like to wear it. Throughout the year we do many art projects and contests. Due to ALL the contests we have the opportunity to do, the majority of your student’s work will not be brought home until the end of the year. I never know what I may be able to use to help better recognize your student. Attached you will find a permission form for your student to participate in these contests. Please sign and return it. Without this, I am not allowed to enter or showcase your child’s work. If during the school year your family and student move or change schools please let me know so that I may give your student all their artwork before they leave B.B. Rice. For this and any other questions or concerns you may contact me at school at 936-709-2700 or email me at rpaterson@conroeisd.net. I look forward to a great year with your student! Thank you!

Students will receive NO homework for art class. There are various contests though that your child may participate in. Should you like to work with your child on these contests you may look below to see what the theme and requirements are as they become available. Thanks!

What are we learning in art?
.
This year at B.B. Rice one thing that we are working on as a school is our growth mindset, which is basically where we are trying to let kids know that mistakes are okay, something that we can learn from and grow.  So, to help further this teaching in the art classroom we are working on a project that will not only allow kids to make mistakes but teach them ways in which they can fix them. Using the book, Beautiful OOPS! by Barney Saltzberg kids were able to see examples of how a variety of mistakes could be fixed and changed into something even better. After having read the book, students were allowed to make mistakes, on puropose, with glue, paint, and scissors. Now that mistakes have been, made students are taking a variety of steps to transform their oops into something better than what it was. For this project, in hopes to encourage students further, I will personally be rewarding the artwork that not only shows creativity but neatness in completion. Winners will be chosen by various judges, and it will all be done in a manner that is anonymous. I am truly looking forward to seeing everyone's ideas and seeing their completed works. I think they are going to turn out neat!

Want to emphasize what we are learning in class?

- Have students look at the world around them to see the beauty that lies in unexpected places
- Have students look at the clouds to see what shapes they see within them, maybe even come up with a story of what is going on
- Allow your child to work with scissors when you need to cut something out, like the box tops, this will help refine their cutting skills
- Encourage your child when they make mistakes, let them know it's okay, and then show them a better way of doing that or how they can grow from that experience

Art Club:

2nd Grade meet on Monday mornings at 7:30
3rd Grade meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30
4th Grade meet on Wednesday and Friday mornings at 7:30

Right now in art club we are working on a project in hopes to spread kindeness and cheer to others. We are creating our very own coloring book to give and have on hand to give to others, whether it be for children in hospitals, homeless shelters, or for maybe even one of our own that may be  going through a trying time. Students are drawing the pages and then going over it with a sharpie to see better when printed. There is no set deadline for this, something we will work on off and on throughout the year to have to be able to give to others.

Students will soon be working on our Veteran's Day art contest that is due by Oct. 28th.
Art Club is open to any student that wishes to participate. Students should get here at 7:30 and have breakfast already eaten in order to get the most out of the club. Thank you!

Art Contests:

Veteran's Day Art Contest:

On Oct. 28, 2016 I will be submitting 10 pieces for the Veteran's Day program that is done in collaboration with the high school and social studies department. These 10 pieces will be selected to go and say thank you and hopefully give encouragement to those that are serving our country right now in the various military forces.  I will be doing this with art club and any classes that finish their oops project early. If you would like to work on this with your child at home all artowrk will be need to be turned in by Oct. 24. Thank you!

Would you Like to Help in the Art Room?
There are all sorts of projects that we do throughout the year where an extra set of hands would be great! Or if at any point you would like to help with just helping get things ready for student art projects, any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I would love the interaction with the parents, and I think the kids would too. Simply email me at rpaterson@conroeisd.net and let me know a few things.

1. Your Name
2. Your Child's (or Children's) Name
3. Things that you would like to help with or do
4. Days and Times that would work best for you
5. An email address
6. A phone number

Before coming up to help one would also need to fill out a volunteer information/registration for the school. Thank you so much for your support!
